Bob Marley Musical Opening Off-Broadway

Music News | Rolling Stone: A new children's play that features the music of Bob Marley, Bob Marley's Three Little Birds, will open at New York City's New Victory Theater in Times Square this February. According to the Associated Press, the show is based on a children's book co-written by the late reggae star's daughter Cedella Marley. It tells the story of Ziggy, a Jamaican child so wary of the tropical storms and evil spirits in the outside world, he chooses to stay inside all day.

This could either be really great or just a flop. 'Let it Be' the broadway "musical" about the Beatles wasn't as great as people thought it would be. It was just a group of four guys dressed as the Beatles singing there song, like a cover band. There was no story. Now don't get me wrong, I never saw it so maybe there is a story, but according to my friends, the cover band seems to be a more accurate assessment. The reason why 'Jersey Boys' is such a success is because it tells a story. The songs make sense to the story because it tells the story of them and how those songs came to be. Bob Marley has amazing songs that are truly an inspiration and people feel good when they listen to his music, but if the story stinks or if there is no story at all then, honestly, I don't think it will be that great. Hopefully, it goes great and it proves my little pessimistic skepticism wrong. (Does that sentence make sense?)

Much like what Becki is saying, I too think that this could either be a really interesting and potentially successful musical, or could just spin-out and burn. I agree with what Becki has to say about telling a story and how that is key, and I think that it will be very different with this musical than the Beatle's musical because this is actually based off of a story that doesn't have to do with Bob Marley, just his music. With that in mind, if the balance between his music and the story is created well, it will most definitely just be a glamorized concert of his songs.

I have to agree with Nick and Becki on this one, though I am a huge fan of Bob Marley and his music I think having a musical involving his music has to have a story line of sorts otherwise they they just have a concert on broadway. Also I have a question as to how playing reggae is good for children. I raise this question due to the lifestyle of Bob Marley. Though he is a man who supported peace and the living life easy, he also supported smoking cannabis every day, since when should we teach the children of broadway goers to support this sort of life. Unless thats what you're into, not my kids, not my problem.

This is potentially a really great choice for a musical. Bob Marley's music is dynamic and would carry a show extremely well. I think it all comes down to the actual storyline and how those two things are fused. I've never read the book but it sounds good for children and that combined with Marley's music should draw a pretty substantial crowd and make for a great show.

My heart just melted. This is truly phenomenal. I was wondering when Bob Marley's Music would be transitioned into a piece of theatre. His words were messages, just like a dialogue between two people. And his messages through the eyes of children is even more amazing. It is interesting to think that his messages are so elementary but they aren't practiced by adults. Hopefully, these children will receive this messages and be blessed with a sensational way of living.
