A Day In The Life - Running Wardrobe - Boyzone 20th Anniversary Tour

Tyranny of Style: Wendy Benstead runs a studio in London that makes exceptional garments for film, TV, theatre, bridal and couture. Over the holidays, Wendy was involved in the Boyzone 20th Anniversary tour. I recently had the chance to ask her about life on the road- a behind the scenes look at the world of wardrobe.

First of all, I have no idea who Boyzone is. I clicked on this article because I wanted an inside look on wardrobing on tour. But I digress. This article was great for that! One of the first few things that stood out to me was how they cleaned the dancers' costumers- with spray vodka and febreeze! And it worked! Thats a neat trick to remember in the future. It also amazed me how much of the wardrobes were "perishable." In theater, while things do break, costumes aren't made to only last for a couple shows. I guess that was a big difference I noticed between these two venues.

It's really interesting to see how much really goes into wardrobe for a touring show. It makes sense once you consider clothing for each of the band members and dancers, and all their wardrobe changes, but I had never really thought about the amount of work it would really take for the upkeep of so many costumes. I'd also be curious to see if all bands rely on stylists to pick their clothing -- does no one have their own style, or is it just better for the band's image to have a professional choose what everyone looks like?
