R2-D2 Is in Star Wars: Episode VII, and He’s Fan-Made

Star Wars Blog: The first behind-the-scenes photo from Star Wars: Episode VII hit Twitter last Thursday, featuring director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and a certain blue and white astromech droid — who StarWars.com can now confirm will indeed be in the film. But who are the two men standing behind Artoo, looking very protective of the “overweight glob of grease”?

Exciting. It seems everyone else is upset about the prospect of more Star Wars movies but I could not be more pumped. The general consensus seems to be that the new trilogy sucked, but I do not agree. The Phantom Menace was without question my favorite of the 6, and the all star directing and producing staff for the new movies combined with their almost infinite budget should lead to some pretty enjoyable new films. Especially if those films have the best androids in the known galaxy, R2-D2 and C3PO. Now one of those is confirmed.

Very cool. I love that fans are being incorporated into the film-making process. Some of the work fans do in replicating Star Wars props, costumes, etc. are absolutely amazing and as this becomes more and more popular, and people's work becomes more and more professional, it seems to be a logical step. I also love the idea that since these are fans who started building astromech droids just for fun, and are now doing it for the upcoming film, they have an added level of love for the films and will probably just make it that more awesome. Fans are part of what has made Star Wars as incredibly successful as it is -- and continues to be. I love that fans are having a hand working professionally and that filmmakers are open to recruiting. I'm excited to see what comes in the new films. I hope that they are inspired by the originals and stay true to the heart of Star Wars.

I am wary of the new Star Wars movies. Don't get me wrong, I am excited to see where they take the story and if characters we know and love play a crucial role in the new films. This article confirmed that at least one of them will be there. R2-D2 has earned a place in the hearts of fans and is there to stay. There is something about this beeping and funny techniques that make him love-able. However, I am excited to see if his trusted companion C3PO is with him in the next installments. I am still waiting to see if I will like the next installments. I liked the fact that they were completed after the first six movies. I don't know where the story will take the audience. If the story is sound and is based in the world of Star Wars I think it will make fans happy.

The most valuable part of the Star Wars franchise is the fan base. That might sound weird, but if you think about it that's why Disney bought it. Disney knew that the fans would come out to see the new films because they love Star Wars. In today's world where customers can give feedback and talk to each other in a way that was not possible in the past it's more important then ever to build a deeply engaged fan base. It's not as important to have a large quantity of fans, but rather to have a high quality fans. One of the best ways to get high quality fans is to recognize the ones you already have and to embrace that fandom. The Star Wars team is definitely doing the right thing hiring people that deeply love and obsess over the things they are now getting paid to do. How could you every ask for a better employ than someone who has been doing the job for years just because they loved doing it.

This was an excellent choice on the part of the production team for the new Star Wars movie. Not only do they gain the experience in Droid building that these fans have, but they get boatloads of great publicity. As Akiva said, Disney realizes that Star Wars already has a highly dedicated and loyal fan base. By actually calling on fans to assist in the movie, it helps connect this new movie to the fandom, and make Disney seem a bit less threatening in what they could do to the franchise. I've read that they are also holding open casting calls for the new lead roles. Although it is highly unlikely that a completely unknown person would be cast, the mere fact that they are giving the fan base a chance to audition and have a part in the film is commendable.

A fans dream come true, the chance to work on a project for his favorite franchise. I can't imagine that JJ Abrams will create anything short of spectacular, at least visually, and as long as the story is up to par there is still hope. With less involvement from Lucas and his old team who's storytelling has been a little rusty of late **cough cough** Indiana Jones 4 **cough cough**. Regardless this Artoo is amazing, and I have no doubt that this team will bring a product like no other to this film, not to mention it's pretty cool that he'll drive on various terrains with little trouble.
