Pittsburgh Ballet opens with American dance icon Twyla Tharp

TribLIVE: Ballet seasons often begin with classics, familiar and beloved, such as “The Sleeping Beauty” or “Coppelia.” But Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is taking a different turn to open its 44th season by presenting two contemporary works by the American dance icon Twyla Tharp. The dancers couldn't be happier.

From the dance shows I have worked in the past, there is a large difference between modern ballet and classical ballet even though they are using much of the same techniques and moves. The costumes tend to be a bit more loose for modern verses the strict leotards for traditional. Doing ballet in high heels is a completely different feeling. I know this because I have started getting into ballroom dancing recently. I have to apply the ballet concepts to the moves that they are teaching me, while wearing high heels. It's a lot harder than it seems. And then they mentioned the dancing backwards thing, and IT'S SO TRUE! It is so much harder for the follow to dance than the lead because they have to do all the moves backwards while matching step size and focusing on not falling over. I am also glad that they are letting someone new solo for their company. Some brilliant dancers stay in the background forever just because they don't get the opportunities to solo or be in any kind of spotlight.
