Radio City Plans a Spring Spectacular, ‘Heart & Lights’

NYTimes.com: Comfort zones have never interested Ms. Haberman. Beginning on March 27, she will unveil “Heart & Lights,” the Rockettes’ first spring production at Radio City Music Hall since 1997. Playing for 59 performances, it will have nothing to do with the Music Hall’s previous Easter spectacles. In the new show, Ms. Haberman brings New York City to life while continuing to modernize the precision dance company with more athletic, technically demanding choreography.

I can not begin to express how excited I am about this. Being from New York I grew up seeing the Rockettes in their Christmas spectacular. I have always loved the show they put on in the winter and it always amazed me. Now I get the pleasure of seeing it in the spring too, only this time there is a lot of new things happening. The Rockettes have always been a New York staple and now they are just becoming even more impressive. This new show should be very exciting and I cannot wait to go see it.

I think this is impressive, and conceptually stimulating. I like to see them blowing the dust off, and reinventing the wheel. I like that Haberman is building upon the spectacle by trying to establish an emotional connection with the show. It's crazy to think that not all of the Rockettes will be cast--and that they are holding auditions within their own company. I wonder if the product is successful, and they end up scheduling more shows if the demand for dancers will increase, and then more opportunities will open up.

I like the idea that the dance company is taking the time and resources to showcase the talent of the dancers. Yes, I'm sure the Christmas Spectacular is great but I have always wondered if the Rockettes had any other shows and frankly I think the idea that they have behind this new show is very fitting. When people think of the Rockettes they think of New York and vise versa. Creating a show in which the two celebrate each other is a great way to showcase the tradition of the association the dance company has with the city. Also, finding new ways of doing traditional choreography sounds like an effective way to keep the Rockette legend growing.

A majority of my summer was spent working on modifying Radio City's christmas show so that a majority of the same set can be used but there was a lot of added automation. I also got to set up the stage and the tracking and rigging for the flying video walls in an arena for their practice and cueing. Radio City definitely likes to go big and Tait loves to make it happen. It will be an impressive show, though I have not seen the christmas show I am confident that the spring show will not let radio city fans down.

Being from New York my family and I attend the Radio City Christmas Spectacular almost every year. This show never gets old no matter how many times you see it and now their offering a show in the spring. This is an amazing opportunity for New York residents and theatre goers from around the world to once again see the Rockettes take the stage again for another spectacular show. Though I'm excited to hear that Radio City is producing another show, I wonder how this will affect the venues concert and comedy schedule. This past spring I was able to see a both a concert and a comedy special at Radio City and it was spectacular. The venue has such a great vibe to it and I'm glad to see that they will be putting on another great show.
