IATSE General Executive Board Votes to Donate to Behind the Scenes

Stage Directions: The IATSE International executive board voted to approve a $25,000 donation to Behind the Scenes during their general executive board meeting in July in Boston. Behind the Scenes provides financial assistance to entertainment technology professionals who are seriously ill or injured, and IATSE President Matthew D. Loeb expressed his appreciation of the organization by bringing the vote to the table, remarking that “Behind the Scenes supports IATSE members in times of hardship and need. We must stand behind this charity so that it may continue its good work on behalf of people working in our industry.” The example from the International set the tone for many local offices and regions, several of which immediately followed with donations of their own or took a motion to donate back to their homes. Locals who have already stepped up to follow the International’s lead include United Scenic Artists Local 829, Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Local 706, Motion Picture Costumers Local 705, and Florida Studio Mechanics Local 477.

I think this is absolutely brilliant. IATSE is a huge union widespread throughout the country with multitudes of people supporting and working within it. Many of the jobs and positions held within the numerous separate locals are often dangerous or something risky, due to the nature of the work. Although there are set safety standards and regulations in place to prevent injuries from happening, the reality is that they still do happen. The fact that IATSE gave back to a program that continues to help their workers out time and time again is phenomenal and something that should continue to happen more often.
