Fall Arts: Classical works mix with modern plays on Pittsburgh-area stages

TribLIVE: The fall season is roaring with the return of “The Lion King” (through Sept. 29, Benedum Center, Downtown), as a part of PNC Broadway Across America — Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre's dark, yet funny “A Skull in Connemara” (through Sept. 28, Stephen Foster Memorial Theatre, Oakland). That's just the beginning for what looks to be a jam-packed schedule of intriguing, locally created projects and equally imaginative offerings from other places.

Being in a program like ours makes it hard to remember that there is a lot do art available in Pittsburgh, and that exciting things are going on everywhere for us to go see. It wasn't until spending this summer in Pittsburgh that I really became aware of how much art this city has to offer; everything from experimental theatre to big broadway musicals and in between. It would be great to find more ways of incorporating the Pittsburgh arts scene into our curriculum here, so that we as students feel kore actively encouraged to engage with our art and the other people who do it.

Like Becca, I often find it hard to find time to explore the city of Pittsburgh and find time to see shows outside of Purnell, but, that has been one of my biggest improvements this semester. Even though we barely have time to do anything that is not CMU related, you MUST make time to go out and see the city, or you will truly be miserable. I have never felt guilty about going to a show that I wanted to see even though I had work to do. I have never felt guilty about going to a gallery or a fair that I wanted to attend even though I had things to do. I guess there is a fine balance you must find between seeing the city and getting your work done, but, I find that ultimately my work has been greatly inspired by the art I have seen in Pittsburgh.

Wow, this article makes me wish I had more time and money! Pittsburgh is a really cool city with so much art and culture available. This makes CMU an even better choice me for because there are so many different opportunities less than 20 mins away. I love the fact that there is so much variety in the art available in Pittsburgh. One cool thing about Pittsburgh is you can see almost any touring show, as this is a major touring stop. For example you could potentially see a Matinee of the Lion King and a concert later that night all in the same day! This truly is awesome and I look forward to exploring Pittsburgh further and spending more time downtown in the cultural district.

Im sorry, I need to focus a comment on the show "We Will Rock You". I am so glad these guys finally get a musical. If the Beatles get a freaking Cirque show, then I should think that Queen needs a musical. They had such an impact on the world of music and the gay activism movement that continues today. Freddy Mercury was controversial in his time, banned because he was openly gay during a time of ignorance. That was so much apart of the band, I am interested to see what a show would be 300 years in the future. Are the issues that were around during the height of Queen be addressed during this show? I would like to see.
