People are always trying to come up with new ways to spread their message and to get heard - the newer and more unheard of the better. This dress seems to have succeeded in gaining attention to the fight. In addition, technology and social media have been playing a larger and larger role in politics, so combining interesting and surprising technology with social media seems to have had the right amount of power to get noticed and cause some actual change in the problem they were fighting.
