Libraries and makerspaces join up in DC, Chicago

Boing Boing: This morning dawned with two exciting announcements from the world of libraries and makerspaces: first, the Chicago Public Library has opened a popup makerlab in the main downtown branch (this is merely the latest in a series of amazing, interactive, maker-ish initiatives from the CPL system). They've got 3D printers, laser cutters and a milling machine.

I think it is incredible that "makerspaces" are starting to pop up around the country. Giving people access to this new and exciting technology while it is still too pricy to most people is so cool. What is even more exciting is that makers everywhere are starting to come together and others are realizing two things. One, makers exist! Craftspeople, designers, and everyone else who just wants to create are makers. Two, makers aren't just those that get marked as weirdos for sitting in their room building 3D files or sit all day in front of a computer sculpting digital characters. Now us makers have a place to come together and share ideas, share equipment and resources and people are recognizing us. With these makerspaces, makerfaire and any other events and locations that are happening, the maker community is really going to be able to thrive and bring in the newest wave of gadgets, software, crafts and anything else they happen to think up.
