20th Century Fox Enlists Help in Bringing Its Properties to the Stage

NYTimes.com: One of the last Hollywood studios without a Broadway division, 20th Century Fox, is diving into the live theater business by teaming with Kevin McCollum, a producer of hits like “Rent,” “Avenue Q” and “Motown.” Mr. McCollum and Fox — along with the film producer John Davis and Tom McGrath, a veteran entertainment executive — announced a joint venture on Thursday to develop a slate of nine to 12 musicals based on Fox films. The shows could go to Broadway or simply tour, either in North America or overseas.

While this may seem like a good idea - get some more musicals going on Broadway - I think a better idea would be for Fox to back some original work going on in theatre right now. There is so much work out there that is either not getting enough money or attention and so much work that is not even getting produced in the first place. If they were able to support new plays and musicals as much as they want to support their own movies, Broadway could really thrive. Lately there are many revivals and not very much original and new work being shown. But how did all of these classics get their fame? Someone had to think that they were good enough to produce in the first place. New classics will never be created if original work is not being produced. This is what they should be focusing on if they want to create theatrical success. People have seen their movies as movies and are happy with them. Why tire people with old stories in a new form? Bring out new perspectives and new voices!
