Radiohead stage collapse: Charges laid in fatal accident

Toronto Star: The investigation into the fatal stage collapse at a Radiohead concert last summer has ended in 13 charges against Live Nation, a staging company and an engineer. The Ministry of Labour announced the charges Friday, just shy of the one-year anniversary of the collapse at Downsview Park. Scott Johnson, a 33-year-old drum technician, was killed and three others were injured at the sold-out show. “It will never bring Scott back, but (the charges are) a little bit of closure,” said Paul Bonney, Johnson’s best friend and the drummer for the Australian Pink Floyd Show. As well was working for Radiohead, Johnson was Bonney’s drum tech.

Looking back I remember seeing video footage of the stage collapse and feeling sad that someone lost their life because of it. With the charges now being placed on the company and engineer, I feel like it is serving the purpose of closure by blame. The article states that the defendants know the charges wont bring the dead back. I remember that the collapse also happened because of bad weather condition and the article states that the company reported that it was designed to be able to handle the weather. What went wrong was the construction, but I feel what really should be taken away from the accident is not the "who" but the "why" and learn from it and move on. Like Into the Woods song my fault, everyone is trying to place the blame on someone so they don't have to live with the guilt when the witch sets them straight by saying that sitting here blaming each other isn't going to solve anything and that we need to focus and move forward.
