J-O-B Assistant Teaching Professor of Theatre Production



Drexel University is looking for a full time Faculty member in theater production to serve as the TD of the new Black Box space and serve as the production manager and mentor for theater program students. Title: Assistant Teaching Professor of Theatre Production (full time, non-tenure track position)

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The faculty member will teach undergraduate courses in Theatre Production, Introduction to Production Practicum, Production Design and other technical Theatre courses depending on his or her area of expertise. Teaching will make up fifty percent of this position and the other half of the load will be to serve as a Technical Director and Production Manager for theater program shows. Experience as a stage manager is a plus.

Responsibilities include:
o Organize and arrange all production and technical meetings and maintain production calendar for all theater program productions.
o Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the Black Box Theater; supervise the use and maintenance of lighting, sound, video, communications, and general stage facilities.
o Determine the necessary technical support, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, for events and performances, in advance of production dates.
o As production manager for the theater program, work with lighting, set, video and sound designers on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for individual shows, and supervise the implementation of approved technical designs.
o Supervise theater production scholarship students and assist with set and stage construction and management.
o Assist in recruiting, training and assignment of theater production scholarship students, and potential graduate students or paid technical staff overhires, for individual shows.
o Teach and mentor the equivalent of two courses per quarter. These may include Theater Production Practicum, independent studies, or any other relevant technical practicum, and Theater Production I and/or other areas of expertise. Practicum classes are equivalent to shop hours for students.
o Orient facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations; facilitate the use of the technical facilities by the theater program and others engaged by or renting the facility.
o Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, video, and tools and arrange for its repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
o Assist with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintain inventory and order specialized supplies.
o Attend technical week rehearsals and supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting shows.

The successful candidate will possess:
o Skills in all areas of technical theater production
o Demonstrated abilities as a professional theater technician
o The capacity to work with a broad range of people, both within the University and externally
o Flexibility and willingness to work with a broad range of the student population, both experienced in and new to the performing arts
o Arts Administration experience a plus
o Experience as a stage manager a plus

The theatre program at Drexel produces seven shows a year in the new URBN Annex Black Box Theater and the Mandell Theater. The theater program offers a minor in Theatre and works closely to mentor students in Entertainment & Arts Management, Screenwriting/Playwriting and Film/Video. Students from every area of the University work on Theatre program shows. The program has over twenty-five students on production scholarship. These are dedicated students who enjoy working in theater and have skills in others areas that they bring to the program to enhance its productions. The program has seen tremendous growth over the last five years and has become an active member of the professional theatre community in Philadelphia. This is due in large part to its Professionals in Residence Program which has earned the program a Barrymore Award. A new program offering a Master of Science degree in Entertainment Technology is in the early planning stages.

Faculty members are expected to contribute to the department, school and university through committee service and faculty shared-governance responsibilities. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in personal scholarship/creative work and maintain and develop professional contacts with local, state, and national associations.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum: Candidate must have a Bachelors Degree in Theatre, a MFA is preferred, and must be familiar with the professional Philadelphia theatre community.

STARTING DATE: July 1, 2013

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
