Broadway League Releases 2012-2013 Season Statistics

Stage Directions: The Broadway League has released their 2012-2013 end-of-season statistics. Broadway shows grossed $1.14 billion for the season (down 0.1% from last year) and total attendance reached 11.6 million, down 6.2% from last year. The drop in attendance is exactly in line with a drop in the playing weeks on Broadway, as several open-ended shows closed and Hurricane Sandy forced the temporary closure of many shows.

Even though the stats decreased for this past year, there is some hope in this report I believe. As mentioned in the article, Hurricane Sandy and early closings did not help the numbers this year. In addition to that, sometimes there are just good years and bad years. This year might have just been that bad year. I believe that because there were so many big hits last year such as "Book of Mormon" and Daniel Radcliffe in "How to Succeed" might have caused audience goers to take "some time off" from the theater. Producers may be recuperating and directors and designers may be working on new shows. It is also very important for playwrights and composers to keep things modern. By possibly allowing time for the fads to pass and the trends to stay, they may be able to more accurately describe the present. Broadway may have had a small slump this year, but it is always ready to make a comeback.
