Union Seeks to Organize U.K. VFX Workers

www.hollywoodreporter.com: A London-based union similar to IATSE is beginning a campaign to organize U.K. visual effects workers after what the union called an “overwhelming” vote at a meeting of more than 300 VFX workers Wednesday. The Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union also called on VFX employers to set up their own organization to promote improvements in working conditions.

So much of the theater industry is unionized that I am fairly shocked that the VFX industry isn't yet. Unions are a really good idea. They keep companies from over working their employees (which is sound like the british entertainment companies are currently doing) and it gives employees an organization within which their voice can be heard. If the SFX industry in the U.K can pull it together and unionize they will be in much better shape.

In terms of raising a family, I wonder if that is even possible in this industry without an organization or union fighting for less intense hours and higher pay for its workers. If you're constantly working and getting paid next to nothing you can't really have a life.
