Voice majors leave audience in stitches

The Tartan Online: Kresge Theatre was filled with uproarious laughter last Thursday at a production written and produced by the School of Music sophomore vocal performance class, The Curious Murder of a Person Not Particularly Liked. Convocation is a requirement for all students in the School fo Music, but instead of a standard formal performance of one solo after another, the students comically arranged classic songs into a musical that swept the crowd away. Every scene had its own unique and standout character.

This is something I am most definitely remiss for not seeing. It sounds like a wonderfully fun and a great way to get a glimpse into the world of a major outside of School of Drama. Drama majors are so self-absorbed and have such full schedules that we very rarely venture out into the wide world of Carnegie Mellon University to see what amazing feats the rest of the campus is accomplishing. CMU has such a widely diverse and incredibly talented student body, yet we stay cloistered inside our own building instead of exploring this diversity. School of Drama students should make it a goal to venture out more to see what the rest of their university is up to, because if it's anything like this musical performance, they will be pleasantly surprised.

Great article. Its funny because I sometimes forget that Parnell is not the only building on campus in which art takes place. There are other types of artists here too! Wish I could've seen this performance, sounds like it was very well done. I like how they made the show have its own storyline, while singing classical music pieces, yet making the overall production relatable and up to date. Pretty awesome.
Congrats to them!

I love seeing stuff about voice majors posted here! Sophomore convocation is a longstanding tradition in which the sophomore class puts on an original performance - can be cabaret style, original show, scenes, you name it. This particular class has a lot of jokesters, so I wasnt at all surprised to see that they had opted for the original script idea - I knew theyd come up with something amazing. And they didnt disappoint! As Wesly said, seeing them integrate the classical songs into this almost slapstick storyline was truly remarkable. Bravi tutti!
