Using Transparency inside of AutoCAD

Lynn Allen's Blog: Transparency was on the AutoCAD wish list for many years before it was finally added into AutoCAD 2011. Transparency actually became an additional object property - much like color, linetype, etc that could be assigned to any object as well as any layer!

This new feature is really cool. I love how the AutoCAD company truly listens to users. As a student who got introduced into AutoCAD world recently, I particularly love all of things that I can do with it. I have only worked with GoogleSketchUp before in order to draft something, so this came to me very intrigued and fascinated. It has very different short keys than GoogleSketchUp and different looking when draft is done in the space. Therefore, I have so much fun learning this. Looking at this video, even though I think transparency feature should have been obvious things included in it, I still think the modification as need-base is working really well in AutoCAD. I really hope to explore more about AutoCAD and learn more specific effects I can put into by the end of the semester.

I make hatches and fills and transparent pretty regularly when trying to block out certain areas and items on drawings so this tip isn't really new to me. However, the expansion on the plot style menu and print transparencies option is new! And quite frankly may explain some of the issues I tend to have with drawings after plotting (where hatches and fills sometimes show up solid or not at all). I've really started to like some of Lynn Allen's blog/video tips and think that I'm going to make a point to check them out more often than their chance appearance on the GreenPage.

I had no idea this was a feature now! I took a year of AutoCAD in high school but we were working with the 2008 version and so never learned about a transparency option. While I have learned quite a few new tricks in CMUs AutoCAD class, we have not yet gone over this exact feature. I guess I am slightly confused on what exactly we would use this for, probably since I am used to always going between hand and computer and you cant exactly make anything have transparent qualities when hand drafting. I am glad that I heard about this and am interested to use this on a project some time to see what effect it will have on the quality of my work.
