Three-Dimensional Clouds Appear in Layered Glass

My Modern Metropolis: Buenos Aires-based artist Leandro Erlich's Single Cloud Collection gives us a surreal taste of what capturing a cloud in glass would look like. Using the artistic method of layering, Erlich's sculptural pieces are given a three-dimensionality. Each "captured cloud" is the illusionary result of numerous panes of glass that are individually embellished with acrylics.

This a great effect, interesting use of an old trick of multiple layers creating dimension. its interesting how this effect still works well from multiple angles. I want to see what other images could be created from the use of the layered glass. while a scaled up version for the stage may prove costly and heavy i think this could be used in a sleep no more style setting.

This is a really nice looking art piece. For my design class a few weeks ago I made a similar effect with layers of fogged plexi glass. Making a 3D object using 2D objects has a really powerful effect on audience members, because it allows them to use their imaginations to find the connections between the 2D and create a bigger picture. I love the trapped clouds because they don't seem like they could exist in the real world and so they really make you look closely.

These are intriguing pieces of artwork which I would love to see in person. Modern art usually confuses me and makes me wonder how people get paid to produce such things, but for once I can see the beauty and creativity behind a modern piece. I thought immediately of the project Akiva mentions above that he made, with a somewhat similar effect using plexi glass. Clear or translucent materials always work with the mind in interesting ways, and can be manipulated to trick or manipulate the images they are reflecting.

I love Erlich's look on his art. Question the impossibility of something. It's great. I think this is just a great way to look at things in general. By looking at his art with this knowledge about it, I feel like my mind would think differently of it instead of just a "this is so cool" kind of thought. I would definitely find myself taking into account semiotics like we've learned in class with susan. With semiotics, I feel like i'd question what a cloud is within the space, what it does to the room, how does having it "incased" in glass change the look of it? Things like that. Having it the way it is in this piece makes you really question clouds and how they are. I really enjoy this. It's fantastically put together.

This was really neat. It reminds me of Damien Hirst's artwork, but this is still quite different. It's great to see 2D paintings layered to create a contained 3D effect. I don't know if I've ever seen something like this before when I come to think about it. Yes, I've seen 3D images that pop out at the audience, but never a contained 3D image. This would be a very cool set design actually. Layer the stage with plexiglass. Create a contained image, and people can walk between the layers of a contained image. There's also something fascinating about glass. It is an invisible wall. Humans always set up invisible walls to block others out. Here, it seems as if humans are blocked out of this natural, perfect image of a cloud. Humans love the beauty of such a natural object, yet it is unreachable.

This is so so so so so cool!!!!

This is exactly what I wanted to do for my clear box project for Susan only i wanted to used stripps of photos layered on top of each other to creat a certian image. however i got side trackted by painting with glue.

this affect with paint on glass creates amazing realism. i wiuld love to see the effects of this in major scale with lighting .

So those clouds in a box are pretty dang cool. His ability to distort reality and to manipulate it boggles my mind. His clouds look so real and yet you know they are not there. Personally I enjoy art that really makes you want to scratch your head. Investigating some more of his work on his website, he is truly talented in tricking your eyes. It is crazy and it is hard to understand what is truly happening. You know within your brain that what you see can not be real but you also know what you are seeing. Awesome I enjoyed it.
