"Sister Act" songs and spirit provide uplift at Benedum

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Forget the snow, the ice, the sub-freezing temperatures. Sparkly, sassy "Sister Act" arrives in Pittsburgh just in time to put a smile on your face and uplift your spirit on even the grayest winter day. There isn't a pun about nuns or a cliche about churches that "Sister Act" won't mine for a laugh, yet even the groaners feel light and fresh. The musical based on the 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg succeeds with bouncy, hummable tunes by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater and a fun-filled script by "Cheers" writers Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, and Douglas Carter Beane. The level of irreverence is along the lines of "We put the 'sis' in Genesis," with the result that you leave with your funny bone tickled and heart tugged, and you don't feel a need to run to confession.
