Profile and Theatre Vertigo hit the bricks

Oregon ArtsWatch: Two of Portland’s more prominent mid-sized theater companies, Theatre Vertigo and Profile Theatre, make their homes in the Theater! Theatre! Building on Southeast Belmont, and today we learned that their landlord will not be renewing their leases. That means that both companies will be looking for new homes for next season, after finishing their current ones in June.

The process of seeking out a new home for not only these two resident companies, but for all of the guest companies and residencies must be a terrifying prospect for the future of Portland's theatre scene. Many small to midsize theatres subsist on the accommodation or generosity of larger entities willing to support and patronize them, which seemed to be the situation with the Tao of Tea company allowing these companies to develop their spaces inside the building until those rooms were deemed more viable for use in said tea venture. I wonder if the theatres might have a case for damages against the landlord for the short notice and loss of inherent facility elements - the theatres said they had just completed a six-month restructuring and investment into the interactions with the landlord, so wouldn't they have a case to at least receive some support for the architectural and structural improvements they made to the building? Or is it purely a "pack up and clear out" situation? Interesting to see the aftermath on this one.
