NFTRW Weekly Top Five

Here are the top five comment generating stories of the past week:

Red Bull Releases Ridiculous Rube-Goldberg-esque Kluge

Geekosystem: Red Bull did another sports thing! This is The Athlete Machine, a collection of Rube Goldberg devices connected by a series of impressive feats of derring-do performed by what we assume are well known extreme sports athletes. After Felix Baumgartner’s jump from space, it seems Red Bull figured the best way to top something huge is by linking smaller, slightly less awesome things together into a sort of extreme sports Voltron.

Epic lightning battle powered by old school Tesla coils

DVICE: Special effects in movies have allowed us to see X-Men emit lasers from their eyes and Iron Man shoot repulsor blasts from his hands, but nothing beats seeing that kind of magic in-person. So it was a special treat when at a recent event in Belfast, Northern Ireland, two men did battle shooting what appeared to be lighting bolts from their hands.

Time Management is a Personal Problem…

lifehack.org: And it’s not one that your work cares about. What? Of course my employer cares about how efficient I am! Well maybe – but it depends on your job. With ‘information jobs’ and so on (by which I more or less mean anything not utterly mechanical) the thing your employer cares about is you getting the job done. They don’t care how many hours into your weekend you work, just that the report is done by the following Monday.

Pittsburgh International Children's Theater show uses darkness, light

TribLIVE: When the theater falls dark and the giant, illuminated puppets come onto the stage, they will tell two popular children’s stories in a compelling way with no dialogue: The movements, the dance, the facial expressions and the characters’ interaction with each other communicate the stories to the audience.

Classic Costumes Go Under the Hammer

Julien's Auctions: On 10th November, Julien’s presided over the sale of 800+ lots for their ‘Hollywood Icons and Idols’ auction, featuring movie costumes, props and assorted memorabilia. The auction’s big draw was a (not ‘the’; there were several) blue and white cotton gingham pinafore dress and original blouse worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. It exceeded lowest expectations selling for $480,000, perhaps not as much as hoped for bearing in mind it is such a well loved costume – top estimate was $600,000.
