Step into Safety Right

Occupational Health & Safety: According to the National Safety Council (NSC), approximately 25,000 people a day are victims of slip-and-fall accidents. The expense of these injuries is running at $3.5 million per hour, every hour of the day, every day of the year. Moreover, compensation and medical costs associated with employee slip-and-fall accidents total approximately $70 billion annually.

Safety shoes are something that many people glaze over when talking about things to invest in. The ergonomics of the foot is one place where many people skimp and buy cheap footwear. Buying quality safety boots with or without the safety toe should be one of the investments that all theatrical personnel make. Improper footwear can cause slips trips and falls but it can also cause ergonomic injuries and cause premature fatigue and major back and knee problems. Personally I got electrically rated linesman boots just to give myself a little extra safety factor. Anyone worried about the weight of a steel toe should look and get a feel for the weight of the new composite toes. Also many people in shops have hard opinions on brands of work boots, although I own Redwings and love them people should do research and really try on as many types and cuts as they can because there is going to be only one that fits you best. Also if you are prone to back problems investing in customized orthopedic insoles can help to alleviate some of these issues.

I think the article raises an important point. In the world we live in anyone will sue for anything a slip and fall accident is a prime example. I think the steps that employers are making are absolutely positive ones. If employers require slip resistant shoes they can dramatically lower their insurance costs. If no accidents are reported insurance plans can remain the same or the cost can be lowered. Companies are also saving themselves a lot of headache by promoting safety. If an employee is required to wear slip resistant shoes and isn't and then gets injured the company does not hold responsibility. This saves the company money as well as a negative image because of safety.
