State of the Spectrum – Part III

TFWM Audio Newsletter Articles: In the previous two installments of this series, we discussed the reallocation of the spectrum and the method put into place by the FCC for licensed Part 74 users to register and protect their wireless microphones. The question was then raised “what about unlicensed users such as churches? What protection do we have?”

Even these new ideas and allowances do not allow small arts organizations to still use their existing equipment effectively. The next ten years will be a very bad time to buy any large amount of wireless technology because I doubt we have seen the last bandwidth sale with this band. I feel really bad for all the churches and small arts communities that are out so much money on technology that still functions but they are not allowed to use. This summer at Santa Fe Opera we needed a large number of wireless clear-com and we had eight old analog packs that we could not use because they were in the bandwidth that was sold off and the company did not want to spend time and money getting the proper clearances to use outdated technology.
