Failure of Musical ‘Rebecca’ Costs More Than Money

NYTimes.com: By the time that $12 million musical imploded on Sunday, its financing having fallen through, Mr. Phillips had endured two postponements of the show and had turned down work on the musicals “Chaplin” (open now) and “A Christmas Story” (opening next month). Like more than 100 others in the cast and on the “Rebecca” creative team, he is now scrambling for work while watching the convoluted story of what went wrong unfold in public.

This is really heartbreaking news because no one wishes this on anybody and at the same time, already entering the fall season, there is little that anyone can do. We hope that this never happens to any one of our shows but there is always a risk when putting up any show piece. Unfortunately, when you attack a theater production, there are so many hundreds of people that end up getting wiped out because it is such a joint effort. It is good to know that the director acknowledges that even the stage hands are going to have a difficult time replacing the jobs that they just lost. Some of the more honorable and supportive aspects of the theater is how every job is important and how everyone is appreciative of everyone. There are of course exceptions, but since I started learning about the production and the weight of work, there is an overall appreciation and collaboration that is really nice to be a part of. Nevertheless, it is depressing that this group had to prematurely break up because of money.

I am really glad that we are hearing about all of the people that where affected by this show going under before it happened. It is sad that people where passing up other jobs and giving up jobs to start this show and now they are left out in the rain. It would be great if someone just came forward to fund the rest of the show so that it can go on. Since a lot of the work is already done and ready to go. I know that it is a lot of money for someone to put up but I am sure that a lot of people will go see it since all the delays that have happened to it. It will be interesting to see where it goes in the coming weeks.
