Benjamin Millepied Tries to Change How Los Angeles Views Dance

Los Angeles Downtown News - For Everything Downtown L.A.!: Benjamin Millepied’s neck hurts. The ghost of an old injury is back to haunt him at the wrong time, just weeks before his new company’s debut at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. While Millepied, 35, has mostly transitioned to a career as a choreographer, the Sept. 22 and 23 concerts were also to be among his final professional performances on stage.

Millepied is taking a bold move with trying to reinvigorate LA with a dance scene, but should certainly be revered for the amount of hardship he seems to have already overcome in trying to rally support. It has always confused me that in a city with such emphasis on the arts and such a large number of people involved in them that dance has never reached a more prominent place.

Also of note is how committed he is to the continutation of this program over a long period of time. Despite the fact that it seems he cannot be personally involved in the dances due to his injury, he is very invested in making a name for both himself and the dancers under his care. I would be thrilled to be able to see this company come to fruition in the upcoming season.
