Marina Keegan’s ‘Independents’ at the Fringe

NYTimes.com: IN late May, a week after she graduated from Yale University, 22-year-old Marina Keegan headed to her family’s summer cottage on Cape Cod to begin revisions of “Independents,” a musical whose book she had written the summer before. The plan was for her to be joined there by the show’s director, lyricist and composer, but she never made it; the car in which she was riding crashed, killing her.

I have to admit that I feel guilty that my first thoughts when reading the excerpt of the article was to the extent of, oh some quasi talented, priveleged kid from Yale wrote a play. After reading more I realized I had most definitely judged too harshly. It really is a tragedy that Miss Keegan's life was taken so soon. But something postitive that can be gleaned from this terrible situation, is how her friends and family banded together and made her dream a reality. Something that I thought was great, was the quote that was taken from her for the article, "It’s not quite love and it’s not quite community; it’s just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, who are in this together. Who are on your team". It was perfect because that was something that she believed and it was something in her life that was obviously true. We wont ever know what would have become of her life and her career, but in a way at least it ended on a high note with a legacy that she could be proud of.
