"Sheherizade" Coming from CMU to FringeNYC

New York Drama Alumni Clan: This time around, in a slam/musical adaptation of The Arabian Nights, Sheherizade, instead of telling the traditional stories from the original, tells folk tales from around the world. The piece works to create the fantastical aesthetic of the book on stage by using a variety of theatrical mediums, including puppetry, dance, poetry and music.

The concept of the Sheherizade show is certainly an interesting one, an amalgamation of culture and diversity, as well as community and creativity. It's nice to see, as well, that even small scale college productions can lead to bigger things, and that the kind of work that Sheherizade is is able to expand. The article describes Sheherizade as "Theatre which entertains, enlightens, and educates", which really is what theatre should be. I'd be interested in seeing what else came from CMU's Playground Festival, and whether or not it lives up to its goals of encouraging creative work and thought about theatre itself.
