An effort to fund art instead of death row

Philly.com: The Philadelphia poet, painter, musician, and activist Aja Beech spent the Memorial Day weekend — whose official observance commemorates those who died serving their country — finalizing the annual "Execute Art Not People" event, which seeks to redirect state funds from prison death rows to arts and education programs.

Oh, gosh. This post is so old that it looks like they've changed their site address since this was posted! The link redirected me to their archives, but a quick Google search of the article title led me to it in the end. Anyway, I never really thought about the fact that taxpayer dollars go toward funding death row. Part of the money I'm paying is going toward... killing people? Now, I'm not a total critic of/opponent to the death penalty. I think that, if it's a matter of money, paying to kill somebody is cheaper in the long run rather than paying for their life sentence in prison. However, disregarding money, I do believe that if someone's crime(s) were heinous enough and their guilt was proven with irrevocable evidence, they do not deserve to live (particularly if they took other people's lives). I think this is the first of these articles where I'm sort of "mehhh" to its message, which is weirdly refreshing. I do like this quote, though: "Everyone makes mistakes in life, but not everyone gets to try and turn those mistakes around or make significant changes in their lives for the better because of feeling abandoned and alone." It definitely made me contemplate my position.
