Developers plan 'performance space' near remains of Shakespeare's Curtain Theatre

The Independent: The discovery of remains from The Curtain Theatre, where Shakespeare’s company performed before moving to The Globe, has prompted developers to plan a “performance space” to commemorate the site and hope the attraction will revitalise a run-down part of east London.

It is amazing that such a great discovery has been made, and that the community is so dedicated to reviving the culture around it. My opinion overall is that this revival is a good thing, not only for the society and history, but for the culture around the theatre and how it relates to the city. However, while this is a very important discovery, the plan to commercialize it will ruin the atmosphere of being in another time. Being a place extremely full of historical and cultural meaning, it should not be modernized for tourism and commercialism. While the revival of this theatre will be beneficial to society and historical context, its original purpose should be revered and respected rather than exploited.
