Teresa’s Weekly Update: Garden Gate Edition

TCG Circle: The old saying has it that laws are like sausages—the less you know about how they are made, the more you like them. Theatre, however, may be more like a garden, and increasingly, audiences want to get their hands dirty. In every community I’ve visited of late—from the San Francisco Bay Area to Fairfield County—theatres are experiencing increased audience interest in the behind-the-scenes process of theatre.

Well I guess this is good? It at least gives legitimacy to our side of the industry. We are not just something that has to happen in order for the show to happen, but something that people are actually interested in knowing about. I go back and forth on whether it is a good thing or not if people know more about backstage work, I think that it kind of ruins some of the magic if you understand how Peter Pan is flown or if you know exactly what Sweeney's blood is made out of. Part of our job is to trick the audience into believing and when they know how all the magic is done it is a little bit less exciting. Also they focus on the tech making the performance about that and not about the acting which I personally think is all that it should be about and the design should just provide the world so that you believe the acting.
