What a wonderful idea. With more schools cutting arts programs, it is great to be highlighting arts educators in such a national way, showing their importance in education and the impact they can have on a student's life. Linking this awards ceremony to Stephen sondheim's birthday celebration will hopefully also help it to get national attention. It's great to see that the winners came from all over the US, especially from small towns and lesser-known places, where the arts maybe less noticed or more prone to being cut. Arts educators can often be under appreciated, especially when schools look to where they can cut costs, and often make someone like the english teacher step in and teach drama to avoid more hiring. But the testimony here from both the students and the teachers themselves affirms how essential these teachers can be to their students, and how arts education can make anyone's life more enriched, whether or not they themselves end up pursuing the arts further.

It's so great to see someone as influential as Stephen Sondheim give such a wonderful award. There has always been talk of how our teachers are underpaid and unappreciated. The Arts ,especially, is an area that gets pushed aside for supposed more important things. "Musicals in our schools" week is an excellent effort in promoting the importance of the arts. I think celebrating this along with Sondheim's birthday will have even greater impact. I loved the few stories that were told about how a teacher changed a life for the better. I bet we all could tell our own story. Our teachers help mold us into who we will be one day and I am thankful for all those at CMU.
