Songwriters Guild of America Jumps Into 'Y.M.C.A.' Copyright Termination Fray

Hollywood Reporter: The Songwriters Guild of America is making a bold move to insert itself in the early stages of a case that could shake up the music industry. The SGA has asked a court for permission to submit an amicus brief in the dispute over whether the original lead singer of the Village People has a right to terminate copyright grants on 32 songs, including the big hit, "Y.M.C.A."

Why wouldn't he have the right? It seems like the record company is trying to make the rule that only record companies can make a profit from music. I know the record companies are having a hard go with the recent reconfiguring of the industry through online media, but taking money from the poor Indian from the village people doesn't seem like the best solution.
