iSquint.net: It’s back! The iSquint.net & Stage Directions Magazine Student Lighting Design Competition (SLDC) is officially underway! We are proud to welcome back our sponsors, Nemetschek Vectorworks, City Theatrical and Field Template. Starting today, students may begin to download the student version of Vectorworks 2012 and a demo version of Lightwright in order to compete in the SLDC.

I like the idea of this contest, or many student based contests, for that matter. Although I am not a lighting designer - the general idea and intentions behind the nature of this competition sounds good. For better or for worse, many people enjoy competition. And it is exactly this type of competition that would stimulate them to either learn something knew or let the knowledge they already have grow in depth. Computerized software is becoming increasingly popular in theatrical design - while many believe that hand done methods of conveying an idea are becoming obsolete (sorry Dick Block.) Vectorworks and Lite Rite are two of the most popular platforms for lighting plots and paperwork. Entering this competition, whether a student wins or not, would at least be a positive experience in learning and growing on software they may eventually use for their careers.

As much as I like student contests, I always struggle with the idea of expanding business through a contest. What I mean is, for example here, you win the product, which you already have a free version of. I know that an actual license is expensive, but it would better benefit the students if they were to win some kind of experience(training, an internship), money towards school (since this appears to be for students), or something beyond just a license which costs the company nothing. But then again, that is the idea I suppose.
