Tori Amos musical shelved by National Theatre

guardian.co.uk: A keenly anticipated new musical by Tori Amos, scheduled to have its world premiere at the National Theatre, has been postponed indefinitely, the Guardian can exclusively reveal. The Light Princess, an adaptation of George MacDonald's 19th-century fairytale of the same name with music and lyrics by the American singer-songwriter, had been due to open in the Lyttelton theatre next April.

While I'm disappointed to see a talented songwriter's jump to the stage indefinitely postponed, I wonder if perhaps it's not a wise decision. Not because Tori Amos can't write music [hey, I'll freely admit it, I own Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink AND Boys for Pele...] but I can only imagine the potential bad press the show itself may have gotten.

Musicians have many times tried [and have often failed] at making the jump from writing good pop songs to writing a good musical. Even artists who have been successful at writing amazing concept albums have admitted themselves that stringing together songs into a comprehensive-enough story-telling event is difficult. With Bono and The Edge's most recent attempt still getting panned as "only decent" and the only consistently successful music artists-hitting-broadway examples being Juke Box Musicals, I can understand wanting to make sure your first attempt is ROCK SOLID.
