Every Role a Starring Role – Disneyland Resort Cosmetologist

Disney Parks Blog: I’m no expert when it comes to hair and makeup, but Erin Zachary sure is! As a Disneyland Resort cosmetology lead, Erin and her team ensure resort performers always have a good hair day.

Being apart of this industry, or at least breaking into it. I know that when it comes to wigs there is so much that has to be done to care for them, prep them and maintain them. But I really found this video interesting because a venue like Disney is without a doubt its own beast. I found it interesting that the people on the team need to have had salon work and or theatre experience. I always thought that the craftspeople who took care of wigs had some sort of special wig maker school or something. But it does make sense, because the work they do is essentially the same. For me its also great to see a little behind the scenes of what the wig and makeup team do. Because even though I know that it exists and needs to be done, it is still such a foreign world to me, so it is cool to see how others get ready for their end of the show.

As someone that is somewhat new to the show industry, I knew that there was definitely hard work that was required for every single detail in a performance. I also had some idea of how difficult it is to care and maintain a proper wig and to allow that piece to perform. It is a third arm for a performer and it needs to sing and dance, rather than hinder an actor. I simply didn't know that there was an entire department devoted to wigs and hair preparation. The video was really good at showing the process and the detail of how to work with the wigs. It was thorough and interesting, and the best part was the shots of the process combined with the shots of the finished product. It just made me want to work for them because it is another art form and it is so important for a place like disney.
On top of that, it was important for me to see that learning the costume techniques and studying for theater doesn't always require you to work for a theater, there are so many interesting jobs for those types of talents.

It amazes me how many different departments can be formed in the industry. I didn't know that it takes so much work to maintain wigs and the special care that they need until this summer. All the special care and skills needed create departments which such specificity. To see how the industry progresses over time and the way in which it grows amazes me. Back in the day people always talk about how everything was done by a few people. Now one specific thing is done by many individuals. Its great to see how you can be a part of theatre or come from a hair salon and work on the wonders that Disney produces.

I don’t think that I realized how much work goes into maintaining the each of the hundreds of wigs and each of them is so drastically different. I would like to see all of these wigs and where they are kept. I found it surprising that they restyle the wigs after every use I would have expected them to do it after every other are so. I also would not have expected them to have an entire department that maintains the wigs

This department sure knows what it takes to put on a show. Sometimes the smaller of aesthetic aspects for a show are overlooked, but a Disney that is definitely not the case. I found it great to hear about there being such a devotion to this area of the performances. I would've never thought that it took this much time and preparation, from such a large group of 70 plus people, to get the job done. Also the team that is made up all had to be well trained and experienced professionals with a cosmetology license. I'm glad to see that Disney is staying true to it's high standards and always going above and beyond what you would expect!

I can imagine how having to maintain all those wigs, prepping, washing, fitting, curling, adjusting, every single day could be a more than overwhelming process. It just seems like a lot of willpower, effort and work in general, and definitely a task that must be divided among a team. I now have a much greater respect for the cosmetologists at Disney, particularly in the hair department, and although this seems like a tiring task, it must be fun to know that your work would be worn by a disney princess!
