All eyes on RSC transition

Variety: News that the Royal Shakespeare Company's Michael Boyd and Vikki Heywood, respectively a.d. and chief exec of one of the world's best-known legit outfits, are to step down in 2012 has caused a whirlwind of rumor and speculation. Names thrown out to replace Boyd include Michael Grandage, Marianne Elliott, Dominic Cooke, Sam Mendes and Kenneth Branagh. Whoever takes the reins of the RSC will arrive with the org in a position vastly improved from the one Boyd inherited in 2002, when the troupe was demoralized and drowning in acrimony.

Interesting, yet not surprising to see that, almost 10 years ago the RSC was in trouble. RSC is one of the world's most important theater companies. Whoever gets that job will have big shoes to fill. Not only in keeping the company on the up and up but being faithful to the company's vision. These two things often don't compliment each other. It is a big move indeed and not a decision that can be made easily. Imagine a president that created a budget surplus and brought world peace one step closer. You're going to want a good successor.

I realize that this company is very important but I don't see why there is a frenzy to see who they will pick to succeed Boyd and Heywood. I hope they'll choose Gregory Doran as he is currently the Chief Associate Director and would provide a more seamless transition as someone who is already deeply engrossed in this company. It seems a bit risky to pick Rupert Goold and I don't think that choice would pan out in the long run even if he would generate more interest in the short term. In any case, they'll make the decision they make and hopefully they will find success with their new heads.
