AFTRA 'Very Frustrated' With Record Labels as Union Inches Toward Strike Vote

The Hollywood Reporter: On the heels of an AFTRA press release issued Saturday, a source close to the union told The Hollywood Reporter that the labor organization is “very frustrated” with the pace of negotiations with the major record labels and for that reason took the step of inching towards a strike posture.

This article was hard to understand in that it was difficult to find out what AFTRA is actually frustrated about. From what I gather they are wanting greater safety measure in things like music videos for their singers and dancers that are part of AFTRA. They are also seeking increased payscales, overtime compensation, residual, and health and retirement benefits. I don't ,however, fully understand how it is the record company's job to provide things like retirement and health benefits. In the end, its good that these negotiations are happening and if successful will lead to a better quality of life and working conditions for everyone in AFTRA.

Honestly, when aren't AFTRA or SAG in some kind of negotiations for what ever demands they have. Yes i do believe that if safety is in question then by all means take it up with your union that is what they are there for but retirement? really? If your getting into entertainment as an actor you really should realize exactly where you stand by means of the fact that you are never guaranteed work. If your not guaranteed work how would anyone be able to guarantee you retirement or health benefits. If your uncomfortable with not having that stability find a different line of work.
