After Brief Labor Dispute, ‘Face Off’ Resumes Production of Second Season

News From Make-Up Artist Magazine: The Syfy reality series Face Off, which features up-and-coming make-up effects artists competing in a series of challenges, briefly went dark during Season Two production when crew members walked off the job Oct. 6 in an effort to obtain representation with IATSE, the union that represents film and TV crew members.

I didn't realize that reality tv crews weren't able to join the union. It seems to me that if some tv crews are able to join the union, they all should be. After all, there isn't a huge difference between reality tv and other tv shows; it's just more spontaneous. Reality tv is, after all, still largely scripted. I happy for the workers, though, that they are now a part of the union and are able to pay into health benefits and pensions plans.

Thank goodness this issue was resolved because Face Off is such an incredible show that has not gotten the attention it deserves! It is a nasty little corner that was exposed, though, that the crew was not initially allowed to unionize. Especially for a show that is trying to highlight the lesser known aspects of film/theater production design, handing the crew the short straw seems pretty unfitting and harsh. Everyone should watch Face Off, though. The quality of the sfx artists is unreal. I would love to take a class in that craft.
