Kyle Cooper’s Projection Design For Spider-Man

Live Design: Unlike his colleagues, Kyle Cooper, an Emmy winner, has Spider-Man experience, having designed the acclaimed title sequences for all three movies, and for many others besides. But this is his first Broadway show, and it came to him via his work with Julie Taymor on her films Titus (1999), Across the Universe (2007), and, as production ramped up, The Tempest (2010).

This is one of many instances of Julie Taymor hiring somebody with film experience and little to no theatre experience to work on Spiderman. Mr. Werner's job was a huge undertaking because there was so much work necessary to make each piece of content applicable to the stage. When I saw the show I didn't think that the media was particularly remarkable; it played a major role in the production, but it was not innovative or fascinating enough to justify an impeded process.

This production had similar issues with other departments, e.g., hiring an arranger with no theatre experience, and at one point having members of Carney who couldn't read music performing.

I did not know that the Projection Designer for Spider-Man was the same one that did the movies.  That is good that they had someone on the team that had worked with this type of material before.  Also I found it interesting that a lot of content was done by the time they did the show.  Also I have been seeing pictures of the show online and other places and they added some more media since I saw the show in December.  It makes a lot of sense that a lot of media was done by the time they got in the space but he was taking large risk in  that if it was not right. He had to be do a lot of work on the spot which takes a long time.
