From the 'Basement' to the Big Apple

The Tartan Online: Over in the Purnell Center for the Arts, an innovative brand of theater has been brewing, thanks to a student-formed theater company, In The Basement Theater. While the company first grew out of the School of Drama’s annual Playground in 2009, Sophia Schrank, a senior drama student, and her team members quickly realized that the company was something they wanted to continue long after Playground ended.

I think this is great. Wonderful to see our students think, act, and focus on fringe-ier projects. Great to see our students and alums (Pigpen) go on to find success in the avant-garde. It's a shame that's not what their students loans prepared themselves for. When regional theatres are going out of business, stagehands are striking, Broadway producers are trying to find ways to get more butts in their seats, playwrights can't make a living writing, what's a SOD student to do? Make art. We have at least that. Sucks that art needs a kickstarter account to work well.
