Mystique Sez: It Ain't Easy Being Blue Either

Topless Robot: "Hey, Kermit! Shut the hell up!" ... is what X-Men: First Class' Jennifer Lawrence might say in the imaginary world where the Muppets team up with the X-Men (fan fic writers, get on that). After all, it might not be easy being green, but Kermit didn't have to undergo seven hours of full body make-up appliance in order to get green in the first place, unlike Lawrence for her role as Mystique in the latest X-Men flick.

What an interesting and specific and challenging art! This looks like such an extraordinary process for both the artist and the actress. There was a show on the scifi channel last year that really brought to light the whole world of special effects make up artists (http://www.syfy.com/faceoff/). I'm glad that this type of work is starting to get more of the spotlight, because it's so creative and so arduous. I would love take a class here where we could learn some of that craft- how to create a prosthetic that not only looks completely convincing but functions properly as a part of the actor who needs it to inform their work.

It is really exciting to see that, even on films that use CGI technology every where they can, the use of traditional makeup artistry is not being lost or even translated to the computer. I am glad that the designers and creative team on X-Men realized that digital is not always better. For many reasons, making sure that as many real pieces that can be used are is very important. It allows the actors to inhabit a real world and allows the DP to better light exactly what he sees. It is amazing to me that, with all of this digital technology and the fast pace of production, people remain patient enough to sit through 7 hours of makeup. It shows what is really important.
