La Roche dancers end year with gala

Post Gazette: "Some people talk about goals. Others make them happen. Maria Caruso is a goal-getter who, during her first academic year heading the dance department at La Roche College, has started to chisel the program into a platform for developing dancers' contemporary and classical backgrounds and fostering artistic collaborations.

I love that dance classes are offered to high school students. Even if they do not always opt for credit, being able to take a college equivilent course is invaluable. I took a number of college courses in high school and what I learned from them was invaluable. From course loads to interacting with college personalities and mentalities, being introduced to that in a topic of interest in which they can be comfortable adjusting to these new standards makes for a much better integration to full college since not everything is new at once.

One of the things Mrs. Caruso said, really made me think about education in general. "We can only grow individually if we can grow the community, if we can grow that support system," she said. How important is the support system for artists of any kind, not just dancers? I think it is very important.

The article said Mrs. Caruso has “beefed up” dance at La Roche. How has she done that? For one thing, she has brought in guest dance instructors. As a dancer myself, I know how important it is to have different instructors in a venue like dance. Every person has a bit more to offer—a different take on an old idea. Besides, that, being introduced to choreographers and people in the dance world cannot help but put La Roche dancers in a better place when it comes to looking for work.

Mrs. Caruso said, “La Roche has just supported me and backed every decision and every choice. They have backed my vision just 200 percent." This sort of support is just what students need in every good school.
