Quantum tackles operatic look at the rebirth of tango

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "It only requires two to tango.
But it takes an international community to create a tango operita.
Elements of tango, opera, poetry and video will come together in an immersive experience with Quantum Theatre's production of 'Maria de Buenos Aires' that begins performances Thursday on the second floor of the former East Liberty YMCA.

I love Astor Piazzolla's music. I have for a long time, though I can't tango to save my life. The show sounds very interesting but I have to call into question AGAIN the phenomenon of artistic directors casting themselves in roles or putting up productions specifically so they can perform in them. I noticed this with Stage Right's production of Jesus Christ Superstar and I see it all the time. I realize many ADs are former directors or actors or both and I realize sometimes these same ADs are the right person for a particular role but more often I feel like its a massive amount of hubris driving it than anything which may make them the "right" choice. I'm being hard on Quantum's Boos since this particular article doesn't particularly stress she's cast herself in an act of hubris but I still can't shake the feeling that this is the case. Frustrated out-of-work actors often attempt creating their own theatre companies so they can perform themselves without having directors or casting agents tell them they aren't right for a role; I guess it's good to be king.
