Soundworks Collection: Walt Disney Imagineers

Vimeo: "The vision and showmanship of Walt Disney has touched more corners of the world and hearts through his many films and theme parks. Since opening his first park 'Disneyland' on July 17, 1955, Walt and his team of dream makers known as 'Imagineers' have created many theme parks around the world.

First of all, there's some incredible antique foley equipment shown in this video! I appreciated seeing some of the history of Disney's sound engineering in addition to hearing about current practices.
Theme parks seem like they would be an incredibly difficult challenge for a lighting or sound designer. Since the audience is constantly moving through an attraction, any lighting or sound cues must be localized and timed so precisely with the show vehicle. A great example of this is the new Space Mountain, as talked about in the film. With such variations in the coaster train's speed, cueing music to match the banks and hills and adding vamps to the end in real-time is both a technical and musical nightmare (or exciting challenge, depending on your perspective). I'd love to see more articles from Imagineers and other theme park designers/managers - the challenges of creating experiences like these are incredibly interesting.

This was an amazing video showing all of the things that I have never thought about. I wish that they showed more things about them in the space and working it. I wonder how they currently make sound effects not how they did in the past. It could still be the same. I never thought about where they put the speakers and all of the components in order to make it work. I know when I go to the parks i sometimes wonder where the speakers are and sometimes if you really look you can find them behind some sort of screen. This video sparked my interest more about how Disney does some of the things that they do.

Every article concerning Disneyland should be posted on this blog. Disneyland's entertainment development is unbelievable and a fabulous reference for the industry. Not only does it consistently morph with modern technology, they understand the psychological elements of entertainment, which, in my opinion, is what has made them so successful. I love articles (or videos) that provide me with a perspective on entertainment that I've never considered before. The conceptual process behind the sound design and construction in Disneyland is so incredibly fascinating and I can't wait to observe these hidden sounds.
