Rhubarb Festival: Lady Gaga gets a musical of sorts

The Globe and Mail: "Of A Monstrous Child: a gaga musical, Saturday night’s one-off performance from the Ecce Homo theatre company, caught my eye for several reasons: It's about chart-topper Lady Gaga, it stars Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s Bruce Dow and, provocatively, Michael Alig, the convicted murderer who was the subject of the 2003 movie Party Monster, is listed as a co-writer. Over email, I conducted a Q&A with writer and director Alistair Newton to find out more.

This is very provocative. Everyone either hates or loves Gaga or loves and hates her. I think to make a musical about her is very interesting. Also to have her played half of the time by a man dressed as a woman really gets at the core of what she stands for. I think Gaga can be looked at threw two lenses. The first is that she is just a fluffy pop artist that is just stealing her style and look from artists that have come before. Alternatively you can look at her as a symbol for the gay rights movement, and that she actually has thought behind her looks and music. Undoubtably Lady Gaga is the source of much controversy, and even if she wears a meat dress just to draw attention to herself at least it's to prove a point and not just for publicity.
