Petronio dancers perform with purpose

Post Gazette: "With dance tumbling forward like an ongoing meteor, I would wager that there isn't a company that combines hyperdance with such distinction as the Stephen Petronio Dance Company, which made a return appearance at the Pittsburgh Dance Council on Saturday.

To Balanchine dance is woman. and cerainly this name in ballet could be considdered the be all- end all opinion for ballet. however thses dancers seem to have an opinion of dance which differs vastly, dispite their ballet training. the preformance sound like an amalgamation of many forms dance, and explores exciting arias of modern dance.

I have always been a fan of dance and the imagery which it can create. Modern dance, especially which includes spin offs of more contemporary dance can speak in such a profound way if done properly. The fact that the dancers have such strict and distinct movement (almost as if they are moving faster then contemporary ballet) adds to a new level of interpreting dance and catering to our senses. The imagery which the company shows so vividly and abstractly is something that a good and upcoming modern dance company can do to stand out from the many others.

I think art that responds to the real world is a great thing. Art is a form of commentary and should be used to show how people feel about what is happening in the world. We need more social conscious theatre and dance. I think it's also wonderful that this dance group is so popular because that means their message is getting out to the public.

I've just started taking a dance class and seeing dance outside of school and I have to admit I've developed a new appreciation for the art. I can tell just by looking at the picture that accompanies this article that this was a visually impressive performance, and the author's words definitely seem to agree. I'm sad to have missed what looks like stunning imagery, but am amazed at the kinds of beautiful images that can come from a art so devoid of verbal expression.

It has never occurred to me that dance can carry a message other than the celebration of the human form, but taking this into consideration, it can and does. TS Elliot, a famous poet, use to strike upon the importance of creating art by stealing bits and pieces of ones predecessors. This dance group however, proves that Elliot may be incorrect. The new and unique is what captures us, and that is probably why this group is popular. I applaud this group for their successful innovation in the dance.
