Enron on Broadway: tale of risk is itself risky

Yahoo! News: A play opening on Broadway next week examines fraud and deception on Wall Street, exotic trading instruments that led to financial ruin, and the consequences of extreme risk combined with insatiable greed.
The Enron scandal, upon which the show is based, occurred nine years ago. But the sins -- such as discarding trusted trading principles to reap profits that are too good to be true -- continue to be committed today.

I remember when the documentary, "Enron" was nominated for an Oscar. It wasn't a well known production, if I recall correctly, but the story is pretty perfect for a stage adaptation in my opinion. Adding in the songs makes me a little nervous. Even though it apparently got good reviews, I'm not sure if it compliments the subject material. It's true what the playwright says in the article, that I although this was a terrible incident, it came at a pretty convenient time. I know fraud has always been around, but we keep talking about corporate conspiracies, and CEO's taking advantage of their employees, and everyone is upset about it but no one can really do anything. Everyone is outraged when some story like this pops up, but really is anyone surprised? I think further humiliation is in order, and a play is a pretty awesome way of going about it.

I'm just glad that folks are still talking about this, it was a pretty huge fiasco to let just wash away into history. If a play like this is a good way to keep America aware of the issue, and slightly more focused on addressing it, I think it's doing its job as a piece of not only art, but political speech. I do think that there is an audience for such a topic, I just hope that enough of it overlaps with broadway audiences.

This could be either really bad or good. I'm sure that it could be really funny. I hope it turn out for the best but I wish that there would be something more serious on broadway than a musical making fun of Enron. I have no idea how these people are going to come up with the songs and it could suck as much as Legally Blond. Some of the things that keep being put on Broadway have been a bit ridiculous lately.
