AutoCAD 2011 Feature Tips Tricks Transparency

Between the Lines: "Here is a great tip from my Autodesk colleague Shiho Tanaka an AutoCAD QA Engineer here in the Autodesk San Francisco office. This tip covers the new AutoCAD 2011 Transparency property which has been a top request of AutoCAD customers."

The Transparency addition to AutoCAD 2011 seems like it may not be quite as widely accepted or called for as the article seems to think it will be. The impression I got from reading the article is that it is in essence intended to replace the drafting mechanic of the dotted line to indicate when objects or parts of objects are hidden. This idea would be a good idea if it seemed like it was easier or faster to setup then a layer with dotted lines.

This sounds like a good new feature. I've often felt frustrated with how difficult it is to make autocad output look decent and maybe this will help make it easier to get things looking decent. Lineweight on its own doesn't really read the way that I'm used to from paper drafting. I'd really like a feature that makes a more comprehensive line weight - maybe by dealing with line width *and* the color as one attribute. Thinner lines should be lighter, and thus get less emphasis. Maybe part of this problem is that plotters don't have the dynamic range or resolution to make this work, but it would be nice to try.

hidden lines? different colors?

i don't think i'll be upgrading anytime soon. unless there's more useful features than ooh-shiny.

implied constraints sounds nice, but i don't know if i want autocad doing the designing for me. osnaps give me enough trouble as it is already.
