Choreographer's collaboration with surgeons, heart patients on stage for ballet

Post Gazette: "The heart is, by definition, a hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood through the body through contraction and dilation.
But that is only the beginning of this story, for the heart is also the emotional center of the body. We remember things 'by heart.' We express our feelings 'from the bottom of our heart.' Certainly, the heart plays an important part in the Olympics, where athletes can rise to new heights far beyond their usual physical prowess."

I love that the heart can be used and interpreted in so many different ways. It is the center of the body, it fuels life, it is the center of love, it feeds our emotions, it is a muscular organ, etc...Because there are two aspects to it, its function versus its non-tangible, emotional connection, I love that Caruso has chosen to merge the two aspects into a dance piece. Dance is a art form that really is so expressive, and to get expressive emotion from patients is incredibly powerful, because it is information coming right from the source that is inflicted with weakness of the heart.
