The play's the thing on London's small stages

Yahoo! News: "If you're scouring London for impressive theater to suit a budget reduced by the recession, chances are it's just around the corner.
Emerging theatrical talent and some internationally recognized names are treading the boards at scores of tiny, independent theatres in pubs, under railway arches and in old warehouses across the British capital."

In a time as dire as the economic recession that we're in, its really admirable to see major notable actors in London stepping up to the plate and employing new trends such as working in small and low budget theaters. Its also great that these performances are in such small venues that you are really close to the actors, personally, a lot of my favorite shows have been in black boxes because how personal the experience of a small theater is and because it really envelops the audience into the story. I could not imagine this happening in the US because I feel like actors in the US aren't really open to exploring this personal theater culture that has an atmosphere that feels like "staying at home" like Old Red Lion and other pub theaters in London but its hopeful to see that this economic downturn resulted in something progressive for theater in London.

It is really great to see small productions getting publicity. I agree with Grace in that notable actors doing smaller projects is impressive. I also like that they are making theater available to the general public and probably a lot of people who would not be exposed to it otherwise. New audiences open up opportunities for new and more interesting theater. I hope this trend will continue to expand.
