Carnegie Mellon alumni have high hopes for original musical

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "An original winter-themed family musical that Carnegie Mellon University alumni helped create is making is debut in Pittsburgh.
The two-act 'Snowed In,' which shows on Friday in Oakland, tells the story of Hill Top Prep, a K-12 school that gets walloped with a snowstorm the day before students leave for Christmas break."

While the idea behind a Snowed In is an interesting one, the idea of merging Grease and High School Musical strikes me as possibly very dangerous for the musical genre as a whole. Grease and High School Musical both have incredible draw power and also do very little to push the genre of musical in any direction except for money grabbing. In both cases, the plays are somewhat empty of any real value except that you can sing and dance your way through high school and it all works out for the best. The fact that plays are being described as High School Musical like is frightening within itself.

Everyone seems to feel a ned to compare a show to something that was successful in the past to put it in a context, but other than both being set in a high school, both being musicals, and both leading to sequels to keep cashing in on the franchise what else do High School Musical and Grease really have in common? The social groups dealt with in both shows are very different, the action of both shows is different (ok, they both have the obligatory love story). Comparing it to those shows seems to me like saying "I watched wimbledon, it's like the world series meets the superbowl".

I'd like to have seen the show since it sounds like an interesting premise, but this is the first I've heard of it so I guess I'll have to wait for someone else to put it on again.
